Matteo Mauro presents Bronze Inscription, the newest artwork and exploration from the artist’s ongoing exploration of embedding his language into material and surface. This new bronze relief merges the conceptual rigour of the Micromegalic and Raw Inscriptions series with the density of material in Mauro’s Inscriptions on Canvas artworks. Bringing these ideas together resulted in a sculptural relief that synthesises all of Mauro’s presence into a single artwork, Bronze Inscription.
Bronze Inscription is the first of its kind, existing as a hybrid where the artist’s analytical structure and material merge to represent language. This unique I/I relief becomes a descriptive topography, emerging with areas of flat and polished areas that serve as dense pockets for light to reflect the linear paths of Mauro’s language. Throughout the metal canvas the reflections are caught and generate a visual depth, through incision rather than addition, the material is excavated from within to expose the artwork. This allows for moments of pause and reflection as each gesture in the material evokes a new feeling. Rather than embedding pigment into the material, the engraved bronze creates a pictorial plane, embedded within the metal.
Unlike Mauro’s other bas-reliefs, Bronze Inscription maintains clean cut edges. These linear boundaries echo the discipline of the artist’s Raw Inscriptions series, where the edge of the artwork serves to complement the artwork rather than just encase it. This continues his investigation into the transformation of writing into spatial belonging, as an artwork to be experienced rather than read. This is the first of Mauro’s explorations in combining his series together, creating a fusion that resulted in a new development of his reliefs.
