Rusted Radishes: Beirut Literary and Art Journal was founded in the English Department of the American University of Beirut in 2012 with the intention of creating a space for both emerging and established writers who have a connection to Lebanon.
The work at RR is a truly interdisciplinary endeavour: the magazine publishes writing, translations, artwork and graphic narratives and acknowledges Beirut as revolving door of influences and cultures, its history, and its perch on the Mediterranean, the heart of a unique convergence of voices.
Beirut è diventato uno dei maggiori centri propulsori dell’arte contemporanea in Medio Oriente e non solo. Il trauma della guerra civile è stato un momento di rottura tra un passato mitico e la volontà attuale di affermare l’identità di quest’area attraverso una precisa immagine culturale. Ci riescono bene opere di artisti come Elie Kanan, Shafic Abboud, Paul Guiragossian o le installazioni più contemporanee del palestinese Rhaman Katanani, dell’egiziano Mahmoud Saïd o dell’iracheno Dia Al-Azzawi.
Uno scenario che fonde linguaggi differenti, nuove tecnologie con una creatività ai limiti del grottesco, capace di riflettere su tematiche controverse come la sessualità, la guerra, l’evoluzione delle donne. Una vivacità che si esprime con l’attenzione sia verso l’arte moderna che verso il contemporaneo internazionale, senza mai perdere di vista gli emergenti. Ed è proprio con questo spirito che cominciano le collaborazioni di Matteo Mauro con l’universo artistico libanese. Presto ci saranno esposizioni in alcune gallerie, mostre personali e un progetto di un mese: une residenza in un museo. Le linee fluttuanti di Aquamarine che sovrastano una delle pagine di Rusted Radishes sono solo l’inizio.
